Standing Ovation Excellence in Family Engagement Award Winner Announced

The 2016 Standing Ovation for D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) awards ceremony will include for the first time an Excellence in Family Engagement Award. This award recognizes and honors a school that fosters exemplary collaboration between teachers and families that improves student success. This includes building positive relationships and trust, ensuring equity, providing opportunities for academic partnering, and communicating regularly with families. The first time winner of this award is C.W. Harris Elementary School.

Heather Hairston, principal of C.W. Harris Elementary School, will accept the award on behalf of the school. The award includes a $25,000 prize.

Flamboyan congratulates C.W. Harris Elementary School and its several other partners who are winning Standing Ovation awards. These include Burrville Elementary School for The Excellence in School Innovation Award recognizing a high-performing and innovative school community that has exhibited sustained efforts to improve school culture and student satisfaction through innovative approaches that support all of its students’ achievement. Principal Tui Roper will accept the award and the $25,000 prize on behalf of the school.

Individual award winners in the Flamboyan Family Engagement Partnership are Constance Thayer of Beers Elementary School, being honored with the Teacher Award for Excellence in Service; and Kim Jackson who will be honored as Principal of the Year for her exemplary leadership at Seaton Elementary School.

In the Rubenstein Award categories, Flamboyan-partner honorees include Sarah Mclaughlin of Seaton Elementary School, winner of a Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective Teaching; and James Davis of Beers Elementary School, winner of a Rubenstein Award for Highly Effective School Staff.

The sixth annual Standing Ovation award ceremony is set to spotlight all awardees on February 1, 2016 at the John F. Kennedy Center. School honorees will receive a $25,000 prize, individual honorees will be awarded $10,000, and Rubenstein honorees receive a $5,000 prize. Standing Ovation is put on by the D.C. Education Fund, an independent nonprofit formed to support the numerous strategic initiatives in D.C. Public Schools through private funding.
